C271 - Known Coins

C271 is a strange occurance as Bauert used a different pair of top rosettes than for other contemporary coins. While we suspect this was a mistake that went unnoticed, Bauert actually made an other mistake while making this die: We can clearly see traces of "1771" between "K" and "M", a mistake that he made on several reverses over the years.

There are four known C271/CO271 coins, and we list them below. On all four reverses, we can see a die crack through the top right rosette. In addition, the coins look more worn on the right side and towards the bottom, and we suspect the die had started to sink in this area. The obverse die is also looking damaged with a worn spot on all four coins at the top of the crown on the right side. It's therefore possible to speculate that the dies were destroyed quite early after being put into production. None of the dies combines with other dies.
