Altona Type 5

Production resumed at Altona in November 1782, but the story of Type 5 soon became complicated. When Johan Henrik Wolff fell ill in 1783, dies made by Johan Ephraim Bauert in Copenhagen were sent to Altona to keep the presses running, creating numerous cross-mint pairings. Wolff’s own Type 5 dies are distinguished by their arrow-shaped lower “1”s and mark the beginning of another substantial evolution in the Altona design.
