Die study · Altona Mint
A clear change of direction: with Type 3, Johan Henrik Wolff substantially redesigned both sides of the coin. The curls of the “C”s become more pronounced, while the reverse gains a larger upper “1” and noticeably altered letter forms. Probably produced from late 1779 into early 1780, Type 3 was extensively mixed with the older Type 2 dies, making the boundaries between the two series anything but tidy.
