Copenhagen Type 5

Copenhagen Type 5 belongs to the intense expansion of production in 1783, when the Mint was producing close to 200,000 coins a week. The series continued the Type 4 design while introducing changes to the “G”, “N” and “S”. This exceptional pace of production may also help explain why the period produced a number of striking engraving errors. Its history is particularly unusual because many Type 5 dies were sent to Altona during Johan Henrik Wolff’s illness, leaving Copenhagen-made dies embedded in the production history of both mints.
